Family #3: Mel - ADOPTED

Mel reached out to Life House in 2020, looking for housing services when she was late into the pregnancy of her third child. Earlier in the year, she got COVID while pregnant and was severely symptomatic, causing her to miss a significant amount of time from work. She was living paycheck-to-paycheck, and she and her two teenage boys lost their apartment. After contracting COVID, losing wages, and being forced to move out of her apartment, she had no choice but to send her teenagers to live with family members while she slept in her car at eight months pregnant. We made plans to move her into the maternity program as she would have nowhere to go with her baby boy after giving birth.

Mel moved into the Life House and went into labor sooner than expected. Fortunately, there were no complications, mom and baby were healthy, and both adjusted quickly to life at our maternity program. Mel returned to work eight weeks postpartum. Over the next few months, she enrolled in an LPN to RN educational program. In the time Mel spent at Life House, she saved a significant amount of money and secured a four-bedroom unit. For her, this meant long-term, affordable housing and the chance for her teenagers to move back in with her. After graduating from our maternity program, she continued working towards her RN degree while working as a technical partner in the Cardiac ICU at a local hospital.

Over a year later, Mel is participating in our Community Outreach Program as she is expecting her fourth child. Overall, she has had a healthy pregnancy, maintained stable housing for her family, and plans to continue working until she gives birth to her baby in December! Her two teenagers just graduated high school, so they are scouting colleges and making plans for their future while celebrating their growing family.
